Nirponos Fry (Goan Breadfruit Fry)

Nirponos Fry is something that I discovered when I was in Goa. My mum used to make this and I loved it because it was slightly crisp and it had a meaty feel to it – the taste is similar to kingfish! In Breadfruit FryGoa, making this recipe is quite popular, and often, the locals pluck the breadfruit from their trees and distribute some amongst their neighbours.

I wait for the summers to buy a nice big piece of breadfruit to make this side dish which is best had with a plain dal and steamed rice. Sometimes the most simple of foods is the best.

During a quick visit to Goa, I was staying at my friend’s (Marchita Fernandes) in-laws bungalow, and they were kind enough to give me a nice big breadfruit from their garden.

Preparation Time : 10 minutes
Cooking Time : 15 minutes
Portion : 4 portions
 
Ingredients:  
Breadfruit ½ a big no.
Red Chilli Powder 1 teaspoon
Turmeric Powder ½ teaspoon
Oil 4 tablespoons
Semolina ¾ cup
Salt To taste
 

Preparation Method:

 
1.           Peel the breadfruit and cut vertically into half. Slice once again vertically into half and cut each into ½ cm thick pieces. Rinse under running water

2.          Apply salt and keep aside for 5 minutes

3.          Drain away the excess water. Add the turmeric powder and red chilli powder. Mix well so that the breadfruit slices are marinated well. Leave aside for about 2 minutes

4.         Roll the breadfruit slices in semolina ensuring that they are coated well

5.          Heat the oil in a frying pan. When the oil is hot, arrange the breadfruit slices on the pan and cook on both sides till done (they will nice and golden brown)

6.         Serve hot.

     
Observations:  
·         If serving as a snack, then serve with Tomato Sauce
     
Suggested Accompaniments:  
·            Dal Fry and Steamed Rice.
